Brief synopsis
Margaret of Anjou, a French princess is pawned off on the battlefield as bride to a victorious English king. Shipped across the channel she discovers her husband to be not a martial hero but rather a simple-minded monk... a man unfit for kingship and overwhelmed by advisors, competitors and intermittent fits of delirium.
A foreigner, she is plunged into the heart of English politics and becomes a major player in the Wars of the Roses, battling to the bitter end to maintain her husband and her only son's grip on the English crown.
The story of a woman's fight to enter the political arena and influence the course of history. The story of her transformation from innocent young girl to hard-nosed politician and warrior, and finally bitterness and destitution.
Background
Margaret’s story runs through Shakespeare’s history plays from Henry VI part one to Richard III. She leaves an indelible mark on the action, but remains one of the Bard’s little known major female roles.
This solo (or almost) show combines extracts from Shakespeare’s history plays and contemporary source material to tell her story.
Résumé
Vendue sur le champ de bataille, Margaret d’Anjou, princesse française, est mariée d’office au roi anglais victorieux. Débarquée de l’autre côté de la Manche elle découvre que son mari est d’avantage un moine simplet qu’un héros de guerre... Un roi incompétent, assailli par des conseillers, de nombreux rivaux, et des crises de folie récurrentes.
Etrangère précipitée au coeur de la politique anglaise, elle s’imposera dans l’arène politique, deviendra un personnage clef de la Guerre des Roses et se battra jusqu’au bout pour garder la couronne sur la tête de son mari puis son fils.
Ce spectacle raconte son parcours : jeune fille innocente, politique affutée, guerrière, reine déchue, vieille femme aigrie.
Contexte
L’histoire de Margaret traverse plusieurs pièces historiques de Shakespeare, de Henri VI première partie jusqu’à Richard III. Malgré le fait qu’elle joue un rôle majeur dans l’intrigue, ce personnage important est moins connu du public.
Ce spectacle solo (ou presque) est construit à partir des extraits de pièces shakespeariennes, des chroniques de l’époque et de correspondances de Margaret.

My need to learn other languages is perhaps the same need that drives me as an actress : speaking a foreign language or playing a part both involve jumping into someone else's skin.
So this adventure to find out more about people and what it means to be alive has taken me on trains and planes to live & act in France, Finland, Italy, Russia, Bulgaria, Germany, the USA...

Screen credits include lead roles in short and medium short films in French and in English, French It Up, De l'importance de tuer les morts, Where is God? & Dans le cabinet du Dr Hartinol and most recently an appearance alongside Gerard Depardieu in Astérix : God Save Britannia.
Tout petite déjà Christine ressentait le besoin de voyager, de découvrir le monde, d’apprendre d’autres langues, de connaître d’autres vies. Elle aime apprendre des langues comme elle aime jouer des rôles : les deux impliquent un saut dans l’inconscient de l’autre. Son parcours l’a emmené en France, Italie, Finlande, Russie, Bulgarie, Allemagne, USA...
Au théâtre elle a joué dans Peines d’amour perdues (Cie l’instant d’une résonance), Lancelot or How to be a knight (Théâtre en anglais), Lumi and I (solo théâtral, France & Finlande) Vicini & La Grande Parapiglia (créations collectives de la Compagnie Parapiglia, Italie), Sous les tours de Notre Dame & A propos de Zazie (Il Palchetto Stage, Italie), La Double Inconstance, The Taming of the Shrew, As You Like It (The Anglo-French Theatre Project), Twelfth Night (Hot Air productions).
Au cinéma elle interprète des rôles principaux dans des films courts et moyen-courts en anglais et en français French It Up, De l'importance de tuer les morts, Where is God? & Dans le cabinet du Dr Hartinol. Elle a récemment tourné une scène dans Astérix & Obélix: God Save Britannia avec Gérard Depardieu et Valérie Lemercier.
Fabrice Merlo - metteur en scène/narrateur
Fabrice Merlo est un acteur, metteur en scène et coach d'acteurs au parcours atypique. Après avoir obtenu le diplôme de Sciences-Po Paris il se consacre à l'art dramatique. Il se forme à Paris (Conservatoire du Centre de Paris, Acting International, Commedia dell'arte avec Luis Jaimes Cortez) mais aussi en Bulgarie, Moldavie et aux Etats-Unis auprès des experts des traditions russes et américaines (méthode Stanislavski, Vakhtangov, et Meyerhold, Actor's Studio...). Fabrice est également professeur de Yoga diplômé de la formation de professeurs des centres Sivananda de Yoga Vedanta.

Fabrice Merlo, director & narrator
A graduate of Sciences-Po Paris, Fabrice should have become a journalist, but the theatre decided otherwise. He studied acting in Paris, Moldavia, New York and Los Angeles where he worked with Larry Moss. He is an acting coach and a yoga teacher.
